Ashford Town 4 Corinthian Casuals 2
Ashford Town increased their chances of avoiding relegation to the Kent League by recording their best result of the season against rivals Corinthian Casuals.
Steve Lovell’s side initially fell behind to a Carlton Murray-Price strike, but four goals in the space of 20 minutes either side of half-time helped Ashford claim a crucial win in their bid to beat the drop.
After just five minutes Town failed to get close to striker Glenn Boosey and he had time and space to slip in Murray-Price, who rifled the ball past Scott Chalmers-Stevens in the Ashford goal.
Ashford soon regrouped and responded on 15 minutes when Matt Newman’s corner dropped to Laurence Harvey. The defender hooked the ball past goalkeeper Luke Naughton, but the shot rattled the post. Two minutes later, Tom Murphy’s powerful effort was headed away to safety by Wayne Finnie.
The home side continued to press and just before half-time they levelled the score, when a sweeping move involving Chris Borchescu and Mitchell Sherwood released Craig Cloke and his stinging drive hit the post but fell to Murphy, who slotted into an empty net.
Ashford continued to push forward at the start of the second-half and they took the lead five minutes after the restart. Newman delivered a curling free-kick into a danger area which Lee Hockey managed to poke into the back of the net.
Three minutes later Town extended their lead. Mark Lovell was given a free run on goal and toe-poked the ball under Naughton to put Ashford firmly in control.
Corinthian continued to battle and pulled a goal back through the lively Murray-Price. The striker latched on to a Tyron Myton through ball and slotted past Chalmers-Stevens.
Town wrapped up the three points on 64 minutes, when Morley slammed the ball home from a Mitchell Sherwood pass to complete the rout.
The victory means the Nuts and Bolts move off the bottom of the Ryman South ahead of Ramsgate’s visit to Homelands on Wednesday.
