Ashford fashion designer catches Mika's eye

An Ashford fashion designer has created outfits for the band backing high-pitched pop sensation Mika.

Lucie Ashworth, 26, from Willesborough runs label Lady Lucie, which focuses on raunchy clothing designed for the dance floor and theatre.

She specialises in using materials such as latex, silk and lace to create bespoke outfits for her clients.

Much of her work is influenced from the fetish scene but one of her latest projects has been to design costumes for the pop star Mika’s all-girl backing band.

She said: “They gave me the colours that they wanted to use, which were pink and silver to match the stage props and other costumes that are used in the show.”

The band came to her studio to be measured for the bespoke outfits before they went on tour.

She said “They loved the clothes they are quite like costumes from a circus and a bit over the top. They have now taken them away and they will be used on tour over the next couple of months.”

Miss Ashworth, whose love of clothing came from her mother’s job as a dress maker, says her style is particularly suited for the performance environment.

“My clothes do have a sense of performance about them but I also want them to be comfortable.

“When you go to college they always say don’t design clothes for yourself, but that is actually what I do and I think it has worked out well.”

Miss Ashworth recently finished a degree course at the Ashford School of Art and Design but even before she had graduated her designs were attracting attention from the music and fashion industries.

Projects that she has worked on include costumes for circus performers, ballet and theatre. She told Yourashford she had just been working on a project for a circus company performing at last weekend’s Glastonbury Festival.

But Ms Ashworth who has been described as a one woman creative army, says she is not as cut out for the world of the catwalk.

She said: “I don’t think that I will ever enter into the world of fashion because I don’t like having to do things repetitively. I like having one off big projects and making something unique.”
